Trainers Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott have mopped up a staggering nine of the last ten renewals of today’s Grade One Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle and the heavyweight Irish handlers are at it again with six of the seven 2024 runners, including the first two in the betting.
Rescheduled Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle Has Been An Elliott and Mullins Benefit Race
Known to many still as the Slaney Novice Hurdle, today’s Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle was luckily squeezed into the Naas card after being called off last Sunday due to fog at the track.
The Grade One race, which carries a first prize of €59,000, had its entry doors reopened earlier in the week, but the final declarations are now out and see seven runners heading to post.
The good news for horse racing punters is the big two in the betting from Sunday’s entries – Firefox and Ile Atlantique – are still in the race.
And with this pair also trained by the Lawlor’s Of Naas dominant yards of Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott, then many punters will be confining their search for the winner to this pair.
Elliott and Mullins Have Won Nine Of The Last 10 Renewals
In recent years the Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle has been farmed by Irish big-gun stables Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins – winning 90% of the last 10 between them.
It’s likely to be more of the same again in 2024 too as the two yards are responsible for 86% of the seven entries (6 of the 7 runners).
Plus, of those seven Mullins and Elliott runners they also have the main two in the market with the best UK horse racing betting sites – Firefox (Elliott) and Ile Atlantique (Mullins).
Therefore, it will be long odds-on that one of this pair wins the race – but if they do have an off-day, then Mullins also has the Rich Ricci-owned Chapeau De Soleil, plus Lecky Watson and Readin Tommy Wrong.
While the Elliott super-sub is Croke Park.
In total the Closutton handler has won the Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle eight times, with his first in 2005 with the Ruby Walsh-ridden Homer Wells, with his most recent 12 months ago with Champ Kiely (watch below).
Elliott has 50% less wins (4) than Mullins and these have all come since his first in 2017 with Death Duty.
Henry De Bromhead Looking To Spoil The Elliott/Mullins Party
Away from the Mullins/Elliott show the only other trainer with a runner in the 2024 Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle is Henry De Bromhead as he saddles An Tobar.
This Robcour runner is not without a squeak of upsetting the applecart either after running third in the Royal Bond Novices Hurdle last month under Rachael Blackmore, who rides again.
The other plus if you are looking to back An Tobar is that the only other trainer to win this race in the last 10 years is Henry De Bromhead, who took the pot in 2021 with his classy Bob Olinger (watch below).

Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle Tip: Firefox Too Hot To Handle
The Tony Bloom-owned Ile Atlantique is the main Mullins runner and after a facile 19-length win a Gowran Park Maiden Hurdle in November will have a lot of backers. The best online betting sites make the Mullins horse the slight favourite in the betting, but with just a whisker between him and Firefox that can quickly change.
Ile Atlantique, who has only had two runs over hurdles, is certainly another exciting Mullins hurdler in the making and with soft ground fine will go well.
However, prior to that last win Ile Atlantique was beaten 3/4 of a length by his main rival here – FIREFOX – and that line of form gives the edge to the Gordon Elliott runner.
This 6 year-old also has more racing experience with six career runs and built on that win over Ile Atlantique by winning a decent Fairyhouse Maiden Hurdle last month.
He beat the useful Ballyburn, who is also trained by Mullins, that day by 2 1/2 lengths and is taken to continue his upward curve and give Elliott his sixth Lawlor’s Of Naas win.
Firefox also holds entries in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Baring Bingham (Ballymore) and the Albert Barlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
