The latest men’s FIFA world rankings have been released with England climbing one place up to third, leapfrogging Brazil in the process. The Three Lions achieved their highest ever ranking after going the whole of 2023 unbeaten.

Gareth Southgate’s side laboured to an unconvincing 2-0 win over Malta and were held 1-1 in North Macedonia in their final two Euro 2024 qualifiers in November, which was still enough to see them rise.

England In 2023

England played ten games this calendar year, winning eight times and drawing twice. Two of those victories came against Euro 2020 champions Italy, with further victories over Scotland and Ukraine capping off a strong 12 months for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Some potential new stars have emerged for the Three Lions but the standout prospect is surely Manchester City’s Rico Lewis, whose odds have been slashed to 9/4 to make the final Euro 2024 squad after his Player of the Match performance against North Macedonia.

FIFA Top Ten Changes

Unsurprisingly, 2022 World Cup winners Argentina remain on top with France still second. England, Belgium and Netherlands are the only nations in the current top ten to have moved up the rankings. Samba stars Brazil slip to fifth, dropping two places, their lowest ranking since September 2016.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were the only other nation who fell down the rankings, now placed in seventh. Behind them, Spain, Italy and Croatia make up the latest FIFA Men’s world rankings for November 2023.

What Next For England?

England have been seeded in pot 1 for the finals of Euro 2024 but before they try and go one better than they did in the last European Championship, they will entertain Belgium and Brazil in back-to-back friendly fixtures at Wembley in March 2024.

The warm-up games ahead of Euro 2024 have yet to be announced but if the Three Lions can conquer Europe next summer, who knows, they may have done enough to be ranked as the No 1 side in the world. Will Gareth Southgate’s side deliver glory next year, the best UK betting sites make England 4/1 favourites to win Euro 2024.
