Although Arsenal set a new record for the most amount of time spent at the top of the table without lifting the trophy, their unexpected nearly-season last year feels like the start of something that may be hard to stop.
The club’s hierarchy have more than backed sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta, and the duo’s shared vision for the future is clear to see.
Nearly £200m spent, including a club record deal for Declan Rice in a monumental statement of intent, highlights their willingness to correct their shortcomings from last year.
There were times earlier in the campaign where the football on display was nigh-unplayable, and no matter how improbable a comeback seemed, the youthful exuberance of Arteta’s budding young squad was pushed to the limit by an impassioned, fervid Emirates faithful.
A spate of injuries to key figures such as William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko towards the tail end of last season ultimately uncovered a worrying lack of depth however.
Too much, too soon it would appear.
They were indeed smothered by eventual treble winners Manchester City, whose shadow loomed ever larger as we have seen so often in title run-ins. They would manage to cut an eight-point gap and then some to lift a fifth Premier League title in six years.
City are, of course, handed an odds-on outright price given their monopoly over the top-flight, but a rapid renaissance in north London should be cause for concern for the rest of the league.
Not even Liverpool – who have been City’s closest challengers in recent seasons – managed to lead in their title winning season of 2020 for as long as Arsenal did last term.
With added depth in defence and midfield now available, this youthful and increasingly experienced team will only improve, which could be a scary proposition given how close they came to winning.
