Kevin De Bruyne The Clear Market Leader

Since the official ‘Playmaker of the Year’ award was created in 2017/18, Kevin De Bruyne has been its recipient in 50% of the total seasons so far.

Last year saw him pick up his third award in six seasons after racking up 18 assists in the Premier League, whilst adding a further 13 in all competitions.

The whimsically inventive Belgian looked rejuvenated as Manchester City‘s creator-in-chief upon the arrival of Erling Haaland, following what was an uncharacteristically slow 2021/22 by his lofty standards.

It is hard to look past him as the warm favourite for next year, particularly off the back of his most dominant year yet in a City shirt.

However, there is plenty of value to be had further down 2023/24’s current market – most notably Trent Alexander-Arnold – whose new-found role in midfield at the tail end of last season looked an inspired tactical shift from Jurgen Klopp.

Operating with a freedom we have not seen previously, the Liverpool full-back-turned-playmaker was unshackled from his defensive duties and looked assured in the centre of midfield, providing seven assists in the Reds’ final 10 games.

Whether he slots back into that role remains to be seen after the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboslai, but at 8/1 he represents excellent value as one of the market leaders.

Last season’s runner-up Mohamed Salah, who finished on 12, is handed an intriguing price of 14/1 which is certainly not to be sniffed at, while Arsenal‘s Leandro Trossard – who also clocked in with 12 – is all the way down at 100/1. Limited game time may hamper his record this coming season, but his pre-season form indicates he is even more settled in north London now.

Further Down The Market

Both Jack Grealish and Bruno Fernandes finished on eight assists each last season which was significantly off the pace, but they have both been handed a price of 12/1.

Therefore, we think it’d be preferable to look further down the market to unearth better value, starting with Bukayo Saka. Arsenal, if their summer business is anything to go by, should be even more competitive than their nearly-season last year, and their prized possession Saka finished with 11 assists, putting him joint-third overall.

Alongside him was Crystal Palace gem Michael Olise, whose future in south London remains uncertain. However, with 11 assists last term he represents an enticing prospect at 20/1 providing he benefits from the necessary game time, should he move elsewhere.

Chief among some of the other notable names to be underestimated is Tottenham‘s marquee signing James Maddison, who has consistently proven his playmaking ability in the top-flight for Leicester in recent years.

Last season he racked up nine in total to add to his 34 in total for the Foxes in the Premier League.
