Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp branded his side’s 2-1 loss against Spurs as ‘unfair’ following a number of controversial decisions made by VAR.

In a dramatic encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Reds were reduced to ten men early on when Curtis Jones was dismissed for a late tackle on Yves Bissouma.

Originally shown a yellow card by referee Simon Hooper, VAR intervened and suggested Jones be sent off instead.

At 0-0, Luis Diaz had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was ruled out after a rapid VAR check by Darren England – in which the offside line graphic wasn’t even shown on the TV broadcast.

However, Diaz was clearly onside and PGMOL later acknowledged that a ‘significant human error occured’ in another horrible look for the technology

Diogo Jota was shown two quick yellows which reduced Liverpool to nine, despite the first foul appearing to be extremely soft and potentially unworthy of a booking.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.

“We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

“[For Diogo Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with nine players is tricky. You want to build something you need players with mentality and I saw them today, they fought. Pretty special tonight.”

As for the apology from PGMOL, the German was less than impressed.

“Does that help? No. We had that situation at the Man United game (against Wolves last month) – did they get points for that? No. We will not get points for it today so it doesn’t help.

“Nobody expects 100 per cent right decisions on field. I think we all thought when VAR came in, it might make things easier. I don’t know why people are acting under that much pressure. Today the decision was made really quickly for the goal. It changed the momentum of the game.”
