Josh Warrington Record: ‘Leeds Warrior’ Is A Two-Time World Featherweight Champion With Impressive 31-3-1 Resumé

Josh Warrington is a two-time world featherweight champion and somewhat of a cult hero in his hometown of Leeds. Here at SportsLens we have decided to take a deep dive into Josh Warrington’s record and entire boxing career so far.

Josh Warrington suffered the third defeat of his professional boxing career as he was emphatically knocked out by Leigh Wood is seven rounds of their WBA World Featherweight Title fight in Sheffield in October 2023.

Warrington was the slight underdog with the best boxing betting sites at odds of 7/4. Up until, the seventh round stoppage, Warrington was well on top and winning the fight. He was well ahead on the judges’ scorecards, but got caught by a heavy barrage of shots from Wood before the referee called an end to the fight.

In his 35 professional fights, the Englishman has had his hand raised all but four times. He has won an impressive 31 fights, with one draw and just three defeats. Two of his three defeats have come in his last two fights for world title against Leigh Wood and Luis Alberto Lopez respectively.

Of those 31 victories, the Leeds man has finished eight of his opponents inside the scheduled distance. The 1990-born fighter made his professional debut back in October 2009, winning his first 30 fights as a pro. He then suffered the first defeat of his career to Mauricio Lara in February 2021, but has bounced back since in a big way.

Josh Warrington became world champion at the first time of asking back in 2018 against Lee Selby. Selby was the huge favourite with the best UK betting apps, but Warrington put on a perfect performance, defeating the Welshman via unanimous decision at Elland Road – the home of his beloved Leeds United FC.

Warrington then defended his belt on three occasions against two-weight world champion Carl Frampton, Sheffield’s Kid Galahad and mandatory Sofiane Takoucht. The ‘Leeds Warrior’ won two of these fights via decision, with a two round demolition of Takoucht back in October 2019.

Then came the first defeat of his career. Not only was Warrington defeated for the first time, but he was emphatically knocked out by the then unknown Mauricio Lara in nine rounds of their world featherweight title fight. There was an immediate rematch of course, with that fight being deemed a draw due to a bad head clash between the pair.

However, Warrington became a two-time world champion next, defeating Kiko Martinez for the second time to regain his IBF World Featherweight Title. However, Warrington’s second reign was short lived as he lost the belt on his next outing against Mexican Luis Alberto Lopez.

Lopez won a close split decision against Warrington in his hometown of Leeds, and has since gone on to establish himself as the best featherweight in the world. Then came Warrington’s challenge against fellow Brit Leigh Wood – the chance to become a three-time world featherweight champion.

‘The Leeds Warrior’ fell just short against the Nottingham man, boxing incredibly well before being stopped in Round 7 of their WBA World Featherweight Title bout in Sheffield. Warrington was certainly winning the fight and was looking good, right up until he got caught with a barrage of heavy shots from Wood which ultimately ended the bout.

That takes up up to now in the career of Josh Warrington. Although he was beaten by Wood, there could be a call for a rematch given how good the fight was and how well Warrington was doing before the stoppage. Who knows what is next for Josh Warrington. One thing is for sure though – he is box office.
