José Mourinho has said Romelu Lukaku is “loved and wanted” at new club Roma, after the striker scores.

Lukaku got his first goal for Roma after joining on loan from one of Mourinho’s former clubs, Chelsea. The Belgian scored the Roma’s sixth goal in their 7-0 win over Empoli.

After the game, Mourinho spoke about how Lukaku needs to feel wanted to be at his best. He alluded to the fact three of his former clubs, who Mourinho also managed, failed to make him feel that way:

“I found him happy, Romelu needs to be happy, to feel loved and wanted. He arrived here and immediately felt that the team needed a player like him. I think he’s really happy, he obviously likes to win and that’s his nature.

“At Inter they have no reason to be angry because they won a derby 5-1 and have an extraordinary team, with many attackers,

“They must be happy for their former coach who needed Romelu.”

Lukaku joined from Chelsea after the Premier League club decided he wasn’t the man to lead their line. The deal is only a loan, but he’ll be keen to impress, so he can find a permanent home and regain his best form.

There was lots of interest in the striker, especially from the Serie A. Inter Milan and Juventus were both rumoured to be interested, but it was Roma who signed him.

Mourinho will be hoping Lukaku’s goal at the weekend is the first of many this season.
