Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo will join German giants Bayern Munich on loan in a deal which includes a £61.5m buy option, according to reports.
Joao Cancelo set to leave Manchester in favour of Munich
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Cancelo is set to join Bayern Munich on loan and the deal is likely to include a buy option in a surpising move for the player.
The Portuguese international had lost his guaranteed starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s side and was left on the bench for City’s last three outings, starting last in the Manchester derby over two weeks ago.
João Cancelo was the only player with 50+ shots, 50+ aerial duels won, 50+ take-ons completed and 50+ tackles made during the 2021/22 PL season.

How will Manchester City replace Joao Cancelo?
In the three games since Cancelo was benched, Manchester City have played:
- Ake at left-back, Rico Lewis at right-back (4-2 win vs Spurs)
- Back three of Stones, Akanji, Laporte (3-0 win vs Wolves)
- Back three of Stones, Akanji, Ake (1-0 win vs Arsenal)
It appears that the back-to-back Premier League champions will continue with life as normal without Joao Cancelo as Pep Guardiola reshuffles, experimenting with three-at-the-back formations and Nathan Ake at left-back.
Cancelo joined the Manchester side in August 2019 from Juventus in a deal worth £27 million but only broke through and earned a starting spot in his second season, being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
According to Premier League betting sites, City are second-favourites to win a third straight title as Arsenal lead the way under Mikel Arteta with a five-point lead at the top.
With Manchester City, the Portuguese full-back is a two-time Premier League winner and two-time Carabao Cup winner but will now turn his attention to helping Bayern Munich win an 11th consecutive league title.
