The Japan Cup 2023 runners will see a big field of 18 entries chasing the £3m first prize early on Sunday morning (UK time). Where all eyes will be on the world’s top-rated racehorse Equinox as he looks to win his sixth Group One contest. We’ve also three British-based jockeys heading to Tokyo – Hollie Doyle, William Buick and Tom Marquand – plus we’ll show you how to watch the Japan Cup in the UK.
Japan Cup 2023 Runners: Equinox, The World’s Best Racehorse, Heads 18 Tokyo Entries
A big field of 18 Japan Cup runners will be chasing the lucrative top prize of £3,147,029 – which equates to around 591,735,862 Japanese Yen, for those interested.
However, despite the big field, this weekend’s Japan Cup is really only about one horse – Equinox.
This Tetsuya Kimura-trained 4 year-old is the top-rated racehorse in the world at the moment – having won five times at Group One level.
The latest of those top-table wins came in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) on October 29th (watch below), which was the second time he was winning that Tokyo prize.
European horse racing fans will also know Equinox from slamming a top field in the 2023 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March. That day he beat Westover, who has gone onto finish second in the 2023 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, by 3 1/2 lengths (watch below).
So, next up for the Equinox winning machine is the Japan Cup – a race his sire Kitasan Black won in 2016.
The best UK betting sites seem to think this Japanese equine star can follow in the family hoofprints as he’s the red-hot 1/2 favourite (see the full betting further below).
Despite being trained in France, Equinox has been ridden in all his races by French jockey Christophe Lemaire, who also won the Japan Cup back in 2018 & 2020 both on Almond Eye and also in 2009 on Vodka (the horse, not the drink).

Hollie Doyle, Tom Marquand and William Buick Have Japan Cup 2023 Rides
There is also an UK interest in the Japan Cup 2023.
Okay, there are no British or European horses being sent over, but there are three familiar jockey faces riding.
Hollie Doyle will ride in the race for the first time as she comes in for the injured Ryan Moore on last year’s winner Japan Cup winner Vela Azul. While William Buick (Stars On Earth) and Doyle’s husband Tom Marquand (Studley) have also been snapped-up for their services.
All three are big prices in the betting with the best online gambling sites with Buick’s mount Stars On Earth, who was third in the G1 Victoria Mile last time out, the shortest-priced of the trio at 20/1.
Doyle, Marquand and Buick will be looking to add to other more recent European jockeys to have won the race – Ryan Moore (2 wins), Oisin Murphy and Frankie Dettori (3 wins).
- Stars On Earth is 20/1
- Vela Azul is 50/1
- Studley is 100/1
