A Newcastle United fan had a meltdown live on air after their late VAR drama in the 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain on match week 5 in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League.

The supporter, known only as Peter, admitted he was crying after VAR awarded PSG an injury-time penalty after an apparent handball by Magpies full-back Tino Livramento, which was duly converted by Kylian Mbappe.

Newcastle Fan’s Comments

“I’m so proud of my team. Considering we’ve had no substitutions [as Jason Cundy said], we had three goalkeepers on the bench and what do PSG need? They need the most cheating VAR decision EVER! It was never a penalty in a million years,” he bemoaned on talkSPORT to Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy.

“It’s cheating, we were robbed! I’m absolutely gutted, my team have given absolutely everything, it’s making me cry watching it – it’s bringing tears to my eyes. You can not dispute that we deserved a result tonight,” he added.

Newcastle In The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League

Newcastle United have had an indifferent time in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, their only victory came in the 4-1 drubbing of PSG at St James’ Park on match week 2 and they have two losses and two draws so far in group F from five played.

The Magpies chances of qualification is now out of their hands, but they can still grab second place if results go their way on match week 6.

Eddie Howe’s side are back in Premier League action against Manchester United on Saturday and the best UK betting sites make the Toon Army 30/29 favourites to beat the Red Devils.

Social Media Reactions

Unsurprisingly, many Newcastle fans were quick to blast the decision to award PSG a last-gasp penalty on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Tino Livramento, like all of his teammates, was absolutely instrumental at the Parc des Princes but his accidental handball will remain the main talking point.

Magpies legend Alan Shearer didn’t hold back either and he also weighed in with his thoughts about the controversial VAR decision. Just a few weeks ago, he was praising referee Stuart Attwell for a rather dubious Anthony Gordon winner in the 1-0 win over Arsenal. Life, it really does come at you fast.

Since the VAR drama in Paris, the VAR assistance has now been removed ahead of the next round of fixtures. Here’s a look at some of the best reactions off of the back of that decision via X:
