Iraq vs Jordan Preview

The Asian Cup Round of 16 action continues on Monday morning as Group D champions Iraq face off against third placed Group E side Jordan at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

Iraq impressively topped a group consisting of Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, boasting a perfect record after overcoming the odds to defeat the Japanese 2-1 on matchday two.

Jordan meanwhile, finished third in their group after comfortably beating Malaysia 4-0, impressively drawing 2-2 with one of the tournament’s favourites South Korea, and narrowly losing to group champions Bahrain on matchday three.

24 spaces separate the pair in the FIFA World Rankings, with Iraq currently occupying 63rd, and Jordan below in 87th, and the pair meet in competitive action for the first time since the 2015 edition of the Asian Cup which was held in Australia.

That clash ended 1-0 in favour of the Iraqis, as they went on to secure a fourth place finish at the tournament after losing out to the United Arab Emirates in the third place play-off.

They have met six times since that day Down Under, but all six of those have been friendly matches. The most recent meeting came back in October, where the pair played out a 2-2 stalemate followed by a penalty shootout victory for Iraq.

Iraq Team News

There are no injury concerns within the Iraqi squad heading into this one, but we expect a heavily changed line-up after Jesus Casas Garcia made 10 changes for their final group match against Vietnam.

These changes were made as qualification to the knockout rounds had already been secured, with central defender Rebin Sulaka the only one to maintain his place in the starting line-up.

Wimbledon forward Ali Al-Hamadi made his first start at the tournament, but after failing to make an impact in terms of goalscoring returns – Asian Cup top scorer Aymen Hussein is expected to lead the line against Jordan.

Iraq Predicted Line-Up

Hassan; Ali, Natiq, Sulaka, Hajjaj; Putros, Al Ammari; Amyn, Iqbal, Jasim; Hussein

Jordan Team News

Like Iraq, there are no injury concerns for the Jordanians heading into this one. Houcine Ammouta also fielded a heavily rotated line-up for his side’s final group fixture against Bahrain, with five changes from the draw against South Korea in the game prior.

Both Baraa Marei and Ibrahim Sadeh made their senior international debuts for the nations in that one, however Ammouta is expected to revert to a similar line-up as of that on matchday two this time around.

Jordan Predicted Line-Up

Abulaila; Nasib, Alarab, Al Ajalin; Haddad, Al-Rashdan, Ayed, Al-Mardi; Al-Taamari, Al-Naimat, Olwan
