It’s the Breeders’ Cup this weekend in the US and with top jockey Frankie Dettori heading over to ride at Santa Anita (California) we take a look at how many Breeders’ Cup winners Frankie Dettori has had at the world championship horse racing event.
Frankie Dettori Has Ridden 14 Breeders’ Cup Winners
Top jockey Frankie Dettori was meant to be riding at this week’s Breeders’ Cup for the final time this week, but in a recent retirement U-turn, the jockey has declared he’s going to race on into 2024.
Dettori has also said that he plans to relocate to the US for next year, with a tilt at the 2024 Kentucky Derby on May 4th the big target on his radar.
However, before that US horse racing fans will get another taster of Frankie Dettori riding on their soil in the Breeders’ Cup 2023 this Friday and Saturday (3rd-4th November) – a meeting he’s ridden 14 winners over the years.
Frankie Dettori Winners At The Breeders’ Cup
Frankie Dettori’s first Breeders’ Cup winner came back in 1994 with the Luca Cumani-trained Barathea, who was owned by Shiekh Mohammed, landing the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
The pocket Italian went onto win the Mile again in 2018 with Expert Eye (pictured), while his only win in the main event – the Breeders’ Cup Classic – came on the John Gosden runner Raven’s Pass in 2008 (watch below).
Dettori will ride Zandon in today’s Breeders’ Cup Classic for US trainer Chad Brown.
Other big names that have etched Frankie Dettori on the Breeders’ Cup hall-of-fame list are Daylami, Fantastic Light and former Epsom Oaks winner Ouija Board.
Dettori’s best Breeders’ Cup race has been the ‘Turf’, with five wins in total, which include his most recent win at the meeting on the classy mare Enable (watch below) in 2018.

US Jockey Mike Smith Has Ridden The Most Breeders’ Cup Winners
With 14 Breeders winners Frankie Dettori is sitting fifth in the all-time jockey list, but still has some way to go to reach the top.
US jockey Mike Smith holds the record for the most Breeders’ Cup winners at 27.
