How do UEFA coefficients work to determine how many spots each league is awarded in the Champions, Europa and Conference League competitions?
How Do UEFA Coefficients Work?
Ahead of some upcoming changes to the format of the Champions League, UEFA coefficients have never been more important as Europe’s best football leagues battle for an extra place.
Two of Europe’s domestic leagues are set to receive additional an Champions League place as the competition expands to 36 teams, four more than the current model which features 32.
Each country is judged on the best average coefficient from all of its competing sides in Europe and the two leagues at the top will get an extra spot each for their performances.
The third extra spot will go to the country in fifth place, which Spain look in complete control of at the minute. The fourth spot is earned through the ‘champions path’ qualifiers – where winners of domestic leagues without a guaranteed group stage spot battle it out.
A win is worth two points, a draw is awarded one and zero for a loss. The points gained by all clubs are added together and then divided by the number of participants to get a coefficient average.
It serves to measure the respective strength of each different league across Europe.

- Italy (15.6 – 7/7 clubs remaining)
- Germany (14.5 – 6/7 clubs remaining)
- England (13.9 – 6/8 clubs remaining)
- France (13.3 – 6/6 clubs remaining)

As it stands, Serie A and Bundesliga would be awarded an extra spot each in the Champions League next year thanks to their clubs’ performances across Europe this season.
Italy still have all seven teams remaining in Europe and they look in cruise control to seal top spot. The Italians have performed well with Fiorentina reaching the Conference League final, Roma making the Europa League final and Inter qualifying for the Champions League final in recent years.
