Honeysuckle Mares’ Hurdle Odds Make Her Favourite

Cheltenham Festival favourite Honeysuckle won’t be defending her Champion Hurdle crown this year – instead she’ll be running in the Mares’ Hurdle.

The prolific winner had her unbeaten bubble burst earlier this season with defeats in her last two races but has still won 16 of her 18 starts.

The Henry De Bromhead camp have since decided that she’ll head for the easier-looking Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival – rather than take on the red-hot Champion Hurdle favourite Constitution Hill.

The Honeysuckle Mares’ Hurdle odds have her as the betting favourite to win the race @ 9/4, in what is likely to be her final Festival race.

The Two-Time Champion Hurdle Won The Mares’ Hurdle in 2020

Honeysuckle is returning to the Cheltenham Festival race where is all began for her, having won the Mares’ Hurdle three years ago.

She’s since mopped up two Champion Hurdles, so win, lose or draw at the Festival this year Honeysuckle will still leave the Cheltenham stage as a ‘Queen Bee’ of the meeting in recent years.

The Last Winning Mares’ Hurdle Favourite Was In 2016

What isn’t great reading for Honeysuckle fans is that the last winning Mares’ Hurdle favourite was in 2016.

Vroum Vroum Mag was the horse to last reward favourite backers.

Even when Honeysuckle won this in 2020, she wasn’t the jolly – Benie Des Dieux was sent off as the market leader that year.

It’s also worth pointing out that trainer Willie Mullins has won 50% of the last 10 runnings of the Mares’ Hurdle. The Country Carlow trainer’s best hopes this year are Echoes In Rain and Brandy Love.

Who Are the Main Mares’ Hurdle Dangers for Honeysuckle?

Many feel the 2023 Mares’ Hurdle is one of the big highlights on day one and some of the entire meeting.

It’s easy to see why, as away from Honeysuckle, we could also see last year’s winner Marie’s Rock, plus top mares – Brandy Love, Love Envoi and Echoes In Rain – all trying to prove they’ve got the most ‘Girl Power’.
