Since Todd Boehly took control of the club in May 2022, Chelsea have gone on to spend over £1 billion on new players but have still struggled somewhat on the pitch.
Ahead of their clash with Premier League newbies Luton Town on match week 20, the Blues boast a central midfield duo that are worth a combined £58m more than the entire Hatters squad.
On paper, the meeting at Kenilworth Road looks like a real David vs Goliath clash but the Big 6 have generally found it harder than expected to leave Bedfordshire with all three points this season.
Chelsea’s spending in recent times has typically dwarfed most teams in world football and when compared to Luton’s spending, the two teams are miles apart when it comes to competing in the transfer market.
The clash on Saturday will be a real eye opener in terms of the gulf in difference of club finances and spending but on the hallowed turf at the home of the Hatters, it has the potential to be an evenly contested affair.
Luton Squad Value
Luton Town’s entire squad value is currently listed at £89m, according to transfermarkt.com. After their recent victories over Newcastle United and Sheffield Utd, several players have seen their individual values increase.
One of those is striker and talisman Carlton Morris, who is valued at £11.2m; the most out of the entire Hatters squad. The 28-year old hit 20 goals in the Championship last season and scored Luton’s first-ever Premier League goal.
Morris has gone on to score two more times in England’s elite and has provided four assists. Chelsea will definitely need to keep an eye on him on Saturday afternoon.
In terms of Luton‘s record signing, Ryan Giles holds that honour when he joined the club in the summer from Wolves for £5m. In fact, Luton’s spending in the last transfer window was just shy of £20m.
The Blues spent a staggering £403m on various international players in the 2023 summer transfer window, around 20-times more than what Rob Edwards’ side did.
Chelsea’s Most Expensive Players
Chelsea’s spending under Todd Boehly has been a huge talking point since taking over at Stamford Bridge and according to transfermarkt.com, the Blues squad value is listed at £854m.
That makes Chelsea’s squad value approximately ten times higher than Luton Town’s which further highlights the huge difference in club financies.
Chelsea’s most expensive players are 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez (£107m) and Ecuadorian star Moises Caicedo (£100m). The midfield duo are valued at £58m more than Luton’s entire squad, according to transfermarkt.com.
Their transfer fees alone are also worth more than the whole Hatters squad. As is the amount that was forked out to re-sign Romelu Lukaku in 2021 (£97.5m).
Fernandez is currently rated at 50/50 to feature on Saturday after suffering a hernia, but Caicedo is fit and available for selection.
