Eddie Howe is under a lot of scrutiny in regards to the role at Newcastle. Their form has plummeted in comparison to last season. It might get a lot worse for Howe when he sees Newcastle’s head-to-head record against Manchester City.

Newcastle V Manchester City

Newcastle host Manchester City on the 13th January and there’s nervousness surrounding the fixture from a Newcastle standpoint. The return of Kevin De Bruyne is enough to send shivers down a teams spine but that won’t be the only thing.

Newcastle have beaten Manchester City once in 32 meetings (D5 L26) in the Premier League. Their last win came in 2019 in a 2-1 win at St James Park.

That doesn’t make great reading for Howe and Newcastle, who’ll be craving a win but Newcastle’s home form is strong despite their season being lacklustre so far.

Newcastle’s form

Newcastle can focus on Premier League football once again after being knocked out of Europe. Newcastle’s first Champions League campaign in over 20 years ended with them finishing fourth in the group stage.

Newcastle are still in the FA Cup and they’ll hope for a good run as any trophy will be a huge step forward for the Magpies.

Newcastle come into this one on the back of three Premier League defeats in a row. They were stunned by Nottingham Forest at St James Park on boxing day as The Garibaldis came away with all three points.

At St James Park this season, Newcastle have 10 wins in 14 – making it a fortress. It will no doubt be a noisy affair and the fans will make it as uncomfortable for Manchester City as possible.

Manchester City’s form

Despite lifting the Club World Cup, Manchester City’s season has so far been subpar for Pep Guardiola’s usual high standards.

A win at St James Park would indicate that they are back up and running. City have dropped points in seven Premier League games and currently sit in 3rd; five points behind leaders Liverpool. Manchester City do have a game-in-hand that could bring them within two points of Liverpool.

De Bruyne does return which will bring some creativity in the midfield. Not that Manchester City need it as they have scored the most goals in the Premier League this season with 45. But with him back in the team, they’ll be more of a balance in midfield.
