Hayden Hackney has been sidelined through injury as of late, but his performances prior to his spell on the sidelines means he is still planted in the minds of top-flight clubs when it comes to high-potential recruitment.

Hackney’s name was up in lights when he scored the only goal for Boro in a 1-0 win over Chelsea in January’s first-leg of the Carabao Cup.

The likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool have long-standing reports on Hackney, yet sources are indicating that if a Premier League move crops up this summer, it might be to test himself slightly lower down the top-flight ladder.

West Ham have scouted him, and the likes of Wolves and Brentford have been suggested to SportsLens as potential other landing spots that may open up.

Hackney, 21, has progressed through Middlesbrough’s youth system and signed a contract last year to tie him down until 2027.

Boro do not want to lose him, which was made abundantly clear by manager Michael Carrick recently who described him as a “shining light” for the club. His qualities are clear and Boro’s failure to climb out of the Championship this term is almost certainly going to lead to interest in him ramping up.

It is believed there is a decent chance he makes a transfer before next season, should big offers begin to arrive for the 21-year-old.

The midfielder has featured 28 times this season for Boro. Typically deployed as a deep-lying playmaker, his smooth style, dexterity with both feet and ability to pick out line-breaking passes has caught the eye.

Those desirable assets have inevitably led to him being likened to his boss, Michael Carrick, with whom he shares a similar player profile.
