Greatwood Hurdle Trends 2022 For Cheltenham Race
Look For Horses With No More Than 4 Wins Over Hurdles
12 months ago, West Cork upheld this trend after coming into the race with just two career wins to his name. Therefore, with a massive 90% of the last 20 Greatwood Hurdle winners having won no more than four times over hurdles in their careers, this is certainly a good place to start with the Cheltenham stats for Sunday’s big race.
Horses Aged 4 and 5 Have The Best Recent Records
Yes, last year’s winner West Cork ticked the previous Greatwood Hurdle trend, but this one he didn’t. The Dan Skelton hurdler defied his age to win the 2m 1/2f race as a 7 year-old, but it’s worth pointing out he’s lightly-raced for his age having had a massive 631-days off before winning this prize last November.
However, despite the result last year, we’ve are still happy to focus on the horses aged 4 and 5 years-old – why? Well, a decent 70% of the last 20 Greatwood Hurdle winners ticked this Cheltenham stat.
At this stage, if the two leading Irish fancies – Thousand Tears and Dads Lad – make the trip over, they would both need to overcome this Greatwood Hurdle trend being 7 year-olds.
A Recent Run Is Not To Be Sniffed At
Next up is to look for horses that have had a recent outing and when we mean a ‘recent outing’ we are talking within the last six weeks. This Greatwood Hurdle trend has been responsible for 14 of the last 20 (70%) of winners, so it certainly makes sense to see when your fancy was last in action.
Top Tip – For those that don’t know, on most racecards the little number next to (or under) the horse’s name indicates how many days it last ran (see below)
Look For A Top Two Finish Last Time Out
With a 65% strike-rate in the last 20 years, then it could also pay to look for horses that finished in the top two in their last race. Yes, a fair few are likely to tick this Greatwood Hurdle trend, but two that don’t (if running) are the fancied pair of I Like To Move It and the Emmet Mullins-trained Thousand Tears, who were both unplaced last time out.
Just 2 Winning Favourites In The Last 20 Runnings
The last Greatwood Hurdle favourite to win the race was the classy grey Detroit City in 2006, so this Premier Handicap race is now on a run of 15 renewals without the market leader winning – great for the bookmakers, but not such good news for favourite-backing punters.
That said, despite the poor recent record of the Greatwood Hurdle favourite, we’ve still seen the average winning SP in the last 20 years at 10/1, while 45% of the last 20 jollies have been placed – suggesting we don’t have to look too far down the betting market for the winner.
Respect The Alan King, Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls Stables
The Emmet Mullins yard took the Greatwood Hurdle in 2020 with the very well-handicapped The Shunter, so their potential runner Thousand Tears will be hoping to provide them with another success.
But, from the domestic yards, it’s been the Philip Hobbs (4 wins), Dan Skelton (2 wins), Paul Nicholls (3 wins) and Alan King (2 wins) yards that have dominated – between them, they’ve won 11 of the last 20 runnings of the Greatwood Hurdle.
Hobbs doesn’t have any entries this year, but at this stage the other trio do. Alan King has Nina The Terrier and Harbour Lake, Paul Nicholls has Sonigino, while Dan Skelton has Playful Saint flying his flag.
DID YOU KNOW: 18 of the last 20 Greatwood Hurdle winners had won no more than 4 times before over hurdles.
