Graeme Souness and Paul Pogba have shared a sticky relationship over the years with Souness coming across as very anti-Pogba. In a recent interview, he explains why he did this.
Souness’ history with Pogba
Souness was critical of Pogba for his entire career at Manchester United. The former Liverpool manager insisted he was a ‘lazy’ and ‘selfish’ player. He claimed that Manchester United had spent too much money on the Frenchman.
Souness also commented that thought Pogba was more of a ‘Youtuber’ than a footballer as he didn’t’ have the ‘football brain’.
On the Second Captains podcast live event in Dublin, Souness summed his thoughts up when he said: “He’s an extremely talented young man. He should be one of the best midfield players in the world, but he’s lazy.
“If you remember how he used to take penalties, that was him wanting to be the star of the show for that period of time.”
What did Souness say this time?
On talkSPORT, Souness explains why he was so hard on Pogba.
He said: “He had the equipment to be the best midfielder in the world. “I saw a young man that was going through emotions a lot of the time, and that frustrated me.
“With that physique and that technical ability, he just did not have the right attitude to make him a superstar.
“The worst thing that happened to him was winning a World Cup, because he could turn and say, ‘I am a World Cup winner’. I think at that point, it was him going backwards.”
Where is Pogba now?
Pogba left Manchester United for Juventus in 2022. The 30-year-old has struggled with injuries since joining Juve but in September he was handed a suspension from football for testing positive in testosterone. There’s whilst an ongoing investigation conducted by anti-doping prosecutors which could see Pogba banned for up to four years.
