Goodwood Cup Odds 2023: Giavellotto & Gregory to Tackle Established Stayers at Glorious Meeting

Deciding against a run at Royal Ascot could prove to be the best outcome for Yorkshire Cup hero Giavellotto, who could now take on the Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami at Glorious Goodwood in early August. The latter heads the Goodwood Cup odds in the early ante post markets.

Early Goodwood Cup Odds See Giavellotto Priced At 8/1

Marco Botti-trained colt Giavellotto beat last year’s St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov at York races last month, surviving a stewards’ enquiry. Connections are now eyeing his next start in the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup after featuring among 26 early closing entries revealed this week.

Although Giavellotto disappointed in the Dubai Gold Cup in his first race of the year, the four-year-old thrived when winning the Yorkshire Cup, reversing that form with Broome and Doncaster placings with the Roger Varian-trained Eldar Eldarov.

“Giavellotto is very well and the plan was always to go straight for the Al Shaqab Gold Cup”, Botti said.

“The horse won well at York and then we were keen to give him more time rather than stepping up to the (Ascot) Gold Cup, as we think two miles is his best trip.”

Among his rivals could be two horses that the legendary Frankie Dettori steered to victory last week at Ascot with Courage Mon Ami and Gregory also entered. The former swept to victory last Thursday to remain unbeaten and take his rider’s Ascot Gold Cup victories to an impressive nine.

Meanwhile Queen’s Vase winner Gregory is said to be well in contention for the Group 1 feature on the opening day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. This staying contest may prove to be vital on his route to the St Leger.

Also trained by John & Thady Gosden and in the same Wathnan Racing ownership as Courage Mon Ami, Gregory was as big as 9/1 for the final Classic of the year before the Royal meeting, but is now the 5/2 ante post favourite to win the race that takes place at Doncaster in mid-September.
