Yes, he’s not actually won a race since, but connections would have had this race as his season target and has been freshened up with a few months off to prepare. Lord Riddiford’s overall form at Goodwood reads 1-5-1-1.

Trainer Mark Johnston has won this contest 7 times in the last 21 years and even though he’s handed the reins over to his son Charlie – he’s still very much involved at the yard.

With that in mind, their sole runner in this race – Outbreak – has to be respected here even though this 4 year-old hasn’t fired the last twice. However, the last of those runs came in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot in June and before that wasn’t far way when 5th of 12 at Newbury over a mile.

A 41-day break for this 4 year-old would have freshened him up again, plus the step back up to 1m2f this time will be fine. The handicapper has also dropped him a pound since last time and it’s a race 4 and 5 year-olds have done well in – winning ALL of the last 10.
