Story Of The Game

Given the score line at full-time, it was surprising that it took 21 minutes for the first goal of the game. Sean Longstaff slammed the ball home after a good cut back from Anthony Gordon, making it 1-0.

The Magpies doubled their lead just after the half hour mark as Dan Burn headed in at the back post. Kieran Trippier’s in-swinging delivery was perfect, and so was the header.

Howe’s men had a third just four minutes later as Sven Botman scored his first goal for the club heading home a Trippier free-kick.

Newcastle led 3-0 at half-time as they ran riot at Bramall Lane. The Blades did start the game well, but it all went down hill after the first goal from Longstaff.

It was 4-0 soon after the break as Trippier picked up a hat-trick of assists. His pinpoint cross was met by Callum Wilson, who scored his fourth goal of the season.

The goals kept on coming for the visitors, and Gordon rewarded his hard work with a goal as he curled the ball into the bottom-right corner to make it 5-0 to Newcastle.

Then Miguel Almiron also got on the scoresheet as Newcastle were still not finished, the Paraguayan was slipped through by Bruno Guimaraes and cooly slotted home putting his side 6-0 up.

Guimaraes then got a goal of his own after Longstaff’s deflected shot fell into the path of the Brazilian, who smashed the ball into the back of the net to make it 7-0.

Newcastle got an eighth late on as Alexander Isak got in on the act too to make it 8-0. There was eight different goalscorers for the Magpies in an unforgettable afternoon in the Steel City.
