As we race closer to the big summer horse racing meeting, we look at the main Frankie Dettori Royal Ascot rides for 2023 as the popular jockey will be in action at his favourite meeting for the last time after announcing his retirement at the end of this season.

Which Horses Will Frankie Dettori Ride at Royal Ascot 2023?
Frankie Dettori, who has won the Ascot Gold Cup 8 times and ridden 77 Royal Ascot winners, announced last year that this season will be his final one in the saddle, so this will also be Dettori’s last time at this showcase meeting. So, can the pocket Italian perform at least one more of his famous flying dismounts over the five-day meeting this month?
The action starts on Tuesday 20th June and run till Saturday 24th, so there are five days for Frankie to get another winner (or two) on the board at Royal Ascot before he hangs up his riding boots in November after the Breeders’ Cup fixture in the US.
With that in mind, we look at the best Frankie Dettori Royal Ascot rides 2023. But note, these are only a handful of possible mounts for Frankie at the meeting with the final riding arrangements coming out 48 hours before each day’s action.
INSPIRAL (Tues, Queen Anne Stakes) @ 5/2
This John Gosden-trained filly has won 6 of her 8 starts to date – including three Group One races and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last season (watch below). However, she was last seen putting in a lack-lustre performance in the QEII Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day last October, so will head to the Royal Meeting on a bit of a recovery mission.
On a plus, Frankie has won on Inspiral 5 times and we know the hustle and bustle of this meeting won’t faze her having won at the fixture last term. She’s also a horse that’s gone well fresh in the past so the long lay-off isn’t a concern, while Dettori and Gosden teamed-up to land this top Group One day one prize in 2021 with Palace Pier.
Overall, Frankie has won the Queen Anne Stakes seven times in the past, with his first way back in 1990 on the Luca Cumani-trained Markofdistinction.
CHALDEAN (Tues, St James’s Palace Stakes) @ 15/8
Frankie has already hit the big-time with this season riding this horse – with the pair winning the 2000 Guineas in early May (watch below). The form of that win has been franked since with Auguste Rodin (12th) coming out to win the Epsom Derby and this Andrew Balding runner has now won 5 of his 7 starts and two Group One races.
Chaldean is also a Frankel colt that will be trying to follow in his father’s footsteps with his dad winning this race in 2011. It’s a race the Balding camp will be hunting out their first win in though, with Aidan O’Brien having the best record (8 wins), while it’s a prize Dettori has mopped up four times over the years, including in 3 of the last 7 runnings.

SOUL SISTER (Thurs, Ribblesdale Stakes) @ 4/1
This 3 year-old John Gosden filly is another that’s contributed to giving Frankie a season to remember by winning the Epsom Oaks earlier this month (watch below). It remains to be seen if she also takes up her entry in the Ribblesdale Stakes (Thurs 22nd), but if she does she’s sure to be a popular pick.
Soul Sister could meet Oaks runner-up and third Savethelastdance and Infinite Cosmos, again too. It’s a contest that Frankie has a superb record in though – winning the pot 8 times and more than any other jockey in the history of the race.
Dettori’s first Ribblesdale win came in 1995 with Phantom Gold, with his most recent Frankly Darling in 2020.
Trainer John Gosden also has a top record in the race with 5 wins and needs just one more to become the most-winning stable too.
FREE WIND (Sat, Hardwicke Stakes) @ 4/1
The final Frankie Dettori Royal Ascot ride to have on your radar is Free Wind in the Hardwicke Stakes. This will be her first run at the meeting but she’s a mare that knows how to get her head in front – winning 6 of her 8 career runs.
She returned last month to land the Middleton Stakes at York (watch below), with Frankie riding and in fact Dettori is unbeaten on this 5 year-old (3-from-3).
Trainer John Gosden has won the Hardwicke twice in the past (2009 & 2020), with Sir Michael Stoute the leading player with 11 successes. Frankie also has just the two wins in this race – teaming up with Gosden in 2020 on Fanny Logan and also taking the prize on 2004 on the mighty Doyen.
