Frankie Dettori Rides Crupi In The Pegasus World Cup 2024
Fresh from his stint in the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here jungle, top jockey Frankie Dettori has settled into his new life riding in the US with a stack of winners at Santa Anita already.
However, the pocket Italian is jetting across the states from his base in California to Flordia this weekend to be one of the leading jockeys at the big-money Pegasus World Cup Meeting, which includes the Grade 1 trio of races – the Turf, Filly & Mare Turf and the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes – now in its eighth year.
Dettori is no stranger to riding in the race as he partnered Last Samurai 12 months ago to be fourth (watch below) in the Pegasus World Cup for veteran US trainer D Wayne Lukas.
Frankie will be hoping to go three places better in Saturday’s $3m renewal as he partners the Todd Pletcher-trained CRUPI.
The Pletcher camp won the race in 2022 too with Life Is Good, so know what’s needed to win this big early season US Grade One.

Frankie Dettori Pegasus World Cup Night Main Rides (Saturday 27th January 2024)
8:45: TAA Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational Stakes (Grade 2) (4yo+) (Turf) (4yo+) 1m½f SKY
RUBY NELL – The first big Frankie Dettori Pegasus World Cup ride comes on this Richard E Mandella-trained 4 year-old filly. She’s the winner of five of her 10 career starts and has banked just over $320k in the process.
Her five career wins have also all come in her last seven races, including last time out at Santa Anita when romping away with the Listed Lady Of Shamrock Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths (watch below). More needed upped in class here but is a filly clearly in fine fettle should give Frankie a nice run.
9:55: 1/ST Bet Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (Grade 1) (4yo+) (Turf) (4yo+) 1m1f SKY
CATNIP – Trainer Tod Pletcher has won two of the last three runnings of this race – he runs Grand Sonata and Jerry The Nipper. While top US jockey Irad Ortiz Jr has landed four of the last five and tries again with the Chad Brown runner I’m Very Busy.
But Frankie teams up with trainer Michael Stidham here on the 5 year-old Kitten’s Joy gelding Catnip. The horse has won four of his nine career starts, with his best success coming in the G3 Monmouth Stakes last June.
He’s since run a fair 8th in the Arlington Million at Colonial Downs at the end of 2023 (watch below). Draw 12 might make life hard too but will have no better jockey in the saddle to try and overcome that wide berth.
10:40: Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes presented by Baccarat (Grade 1) (4yo+) (Main Track) (Dirt) (4yo+) 1m1f SKY
CRUPI – Dettori finished fourth in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes 12 months ago on Last Samurai, in what was meant to be his last ride in the contest. However, after a retirement U-turn Frankie is back for more Gulfstream action this weekend in the race and will try his luck on the Todd Pletcher-trained Crupi.
This son of the mighty Curlin has won four of his 12 career runs, winning just over $370k in the process. These four successes have also all come in his last five races – including winning his last two outings at Aqueduct.
The most recent of those was in the Queens County Stakes Listed race on New Year’s Eve, while sandwiched in between his wins he came fifth in the 2023 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing (watch below).
The Pletcher yard also won the Pegasus World Cup in 2022 with Life Is Good and have two others in the race – Dynamic One and Grand Aspen.
