Friday’s bet365 Fillies’ Mile is the feature Group One race on the opening day of the Newmarket Future Champions fixture and if the betting is to be believed it’s all about one horse – the John Gosden-trained Commissioning.

2022 Fillies’ Mile: The Key Trends To Note
Friday’s Group One Fillies’ Mile is the main draw from five Newmarket races being shown LIVE on ITV and all eyes will be on the unbeaten John Gosden filly COMMISSIONING @ 8/13 with 888Sport, who has been all the rage in the Fillies’ Mile 2022 betting since bolting-up in her opening two races.
She went into many a notebook on debut when winning by 3 1/2 lengths at Newmarket on the July Course, with her jockey that day, Frankie Dettori, saying after the race “She really took off!” – you can watch that debut race below
Commissioning then showed that first run to be no fluke when bolting up in the G2 Rockfel Stakes, again at Newmarket, but this time on the Rowley Mile (see below). Therefore, we know the track at HQ is fine and her experience of the course will be a big plus ahead of Friday’s contest.
The Kingman filly is already @ 13/2 with 888Sport for the 2023 English 1,000 Guineas, but you feel another impressive performance in Friday’s bet365 Fillies’ Mile will see those odds shorten further.

A Look At The Main 2022 Fillies’ Mile Stats and Trends
ALL Of The Last 18 Fillies’ Mile Winners Raced In The Last 4 Weeks
A good place to start is that ALL of the recent 18 winners had been in action in the last 4 weeks. As always, with these ‘days last ran stats’ it’s best to give a bit of slack (2-3 days) and even though most fit the bill, we can put a line through Alseyoob (35 days), Bright Diamond (41 days) and Sparkling Beauty (48 days).
16 Of The Last 18 Winners Had Won Over 7f or 1m Before
Another thing to look for is winning form over 7f or a mile. In short, horses stepping up from 5 or 6f haven’t done as well. The good news though is that ALL 8 runners tick this Fillies’ Mile trend.
78% Of The Last 18 Winners Had Won 2 or 3 Times
Having already bagged 2 or 3 wins is another key Fillies’ Mile trend to look out for – this has been the case for 14 of the last 18 winners. Those that have either won too many (4 or more) or too less (1 or lower) are Polly Pott, Sparkling Beauty, Bright Diamond, Library and Novakai.
With two career wins, this is another big plus for the market leader Commissioning.
50% Winning Favourites Since 2004
Not a bad record for the favourites in this race either – with 9 of the last 18 jollies rewarding punters. With Commissioning set to go off as the Fillies’ Mile favourite this will be a further stat in her favour.
We’ve also seen 14 of the last 18 favourites placed in the race.
Trainer John Gosden Has Won The Fillies’ Mile 5 Times
Inspiral (watch below) won this for the Gosden yard 12 months ago and that was their fourth success in this Group One. They first won the prize in 2000 with the Frankie Dettori-ridden Crystal Music.
They added ‘back-to-back’ wins in 2004 with Playful Act and 2005 with Nannina – both ridden by Jimmy Fortune. While their only other win in the Fillies’ Mile came in 2008 with the George Strawbridge-owned Rainbow View
Aidan O’Brien Also Has A Decent Fillies Mile Record
The powerful Irish yard of Aidan O’Brien also like to target this race – they’ve also landed the first prize five times. Their most recent came between 2014 and 2016 with a hat-trick of successes with Together Forever, Minding, who went onto win the 1,000 Guineas the following season, and Rhododendron.
Prior to that, the won the race for the first time in 1998 with Sunspangled and in 2007 with Listen.
Is The Fillies’ Mile Really A Good Pointer To The 1,000 Guineas?
The Fillies’ Mile is often seen as a good guide ahead of the 1,000 Guineas, back at Newmarket, for the following season. Last year the winner – Inspiral – bypassed the English Classic though, preferring to wait until Royal Ascot in June.
The last horse to win the Fillies’ Mile and follow-up in the 1,000 Guineas the following term was the Aidan O’Brien-trained Minding in 2015 and 2016,
However, before that win for Minding you have to go back to Bosra Sham in 1995 and 1996 to find the last filly that did the double, so is this race really as good a 1,000 Guineas guide as many suggest?
At this stage, the John Gosden runner Commissioning @ 13/2 with 888Sport is the general second favourite in the betting for the 2023 1,000 Guineas behind Tahiyra @ 3/1 with 888Sport
