Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the signing of Mateo Kovacic for Manchester City, with the 29-year-old joining for £25 million from Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have secured their first signing of the summer, with Mateo Kovacic’s move confirmed on Wednesday morning.

Kovacic has played for Chelsea since 2018 and has become one of the most experienced heads in the dressing room over the past five seasons at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old played 27 Premier League games last season, featuring for Chelsea predominantly from the bench in a difficult campaign.

Kovacic played under three different managers last season, with Thomas Tuchel, Frank Lampard and Graham Potter all taking charge of Chelsea at different points of the year.

However, after five years at Chelsea it is finally time for Kovacic to move on, as Pep Guardiola makes the experienced midfielder his first signing of the summer.

Kovacic joins a side that have only just finished celebrating the treble from last season, but if City’s past successes are anything to go by then they certainly won’t be slowing down any time soon.

City will pay the fairly small fee of £25 million to Chelsea this summer for a player who Guardiola has been a fan of for some time now.

Guardiola reportedly tried to sign Kovacic in 2019 as he believes the Croatian can play anywhere in midfield, but he wasn’t able to secure the Chelsea mans services just yet.

With Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan leaving the Etihad this season, Kovacic is the perfect replacement signing for Guardiola who can slot the versatile midfielder into his squad with ease.
