The relegation battle is heating up as we approach the last weeks of the season and Everton took one step closer to Premier League survival on Monday, after a shocking 5-1 win over top five hopefuls Brighton.

It certainly didn’t take Everton long to get going on bank holiday Monday, as Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the visitors an early advantage after just 34 seconds.

The Everton midfielder was picked out in the box beautifully by a Dominic Calvert-Lewin cross and Doucoure finished with ease at the back post to put Everton ahead.

The away end was bouncing all afternoon at the Amex and the corner of the stadium where the Everton fans were located almost began to shake in the 30th minute when Doucoure grabbed his second of the game.

With a finish much harder than the first, Doucoure volleyed a powerful strike into the bottom right corner of Jason Steele’s net to double the visitors’ advantage with an hour left to play.

Steele had only just finished picking the ball out of his net when he conceded Brighton’s third of the game and this time it was an own goal from the keeper himself.

A Dwight McNeil cutback took a heavy deflection off the goalkeeper and bounced into his own net to make the score 3-0 to Everton and all but secure a vital three points on the road before half time.

Nobody would have predicted Everton to be four goals to the good on Monday but the Toffees were having a field day in front of goal and McNeil capitalised late on, scoring his sixth of the season to cap off a perfect performance for the travelling side.

Brighton were able to score one consolation goal late on, as Alexis Mac Allister netted for the second game running to give the home fans something to cheer about.

McNeil scored his second of the game in the dying embers of the match to secure a win for Everton that takes them clear of the relegation zone by two points with three games left to play.
