Having been heavily linked with a move for Rasmus Hojlund in recent weeks, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag told the media that his side ‘absolutely’ needs a new striker after they were defeated 2-0 by Real Madrid in pre-season.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed that his side ‘absolutely’ need a new striker after being defeated 2-0 by Real Madrid on their pre-season tour of the United States.

The Red Devils have been in talks with Atalanta over a move for Danish talent Rasmus Hojlund, but despite agreeing personal terms – a gap in valuation still exists between the two clubs.

United reportedly lodged a bid worth €60million including add-ons, however the Serie A side are looking for €70million in order to sell the young forward.

Talks between the clubs remain ongoing, but Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing him and are still in the race for his signature, per David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Jude Bellingham scored the opener for Los Blancos in Houston, before Joselu doubled the lead in the final stages to condemn Ten Hag’s side to a second consecutive defeat in pre-season.

The Red Devils had 14 attempts on the La Liga side’s goal, but failed to convert any in a similar story to their failings in front of goal last season.

Ten Hag was asked if his side’s performance in front of goal emphasised their need for a new striker, to which he responded: “Absolutely.

“There were two things – the pressing can be better from the start, and scoring goals.

“I think we need more players who are capable to be in the one-on-ones and we had the situations of one-on-ones.

“It was (Marcus) Rashford, it was, I thought, Scott McTominay in one-on-one situations. Garnacho, a one-on-one situation. From the situations, you have to score.”

United have one game remaining of their United States tour, where they face off against Borussia Dortmund at the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada in the early hours of Monday morning.
