Liverpool have failed in their appeal to overturn a three-match ban for Curtis Jones following his challenge on Destiny Udogie.

Jones was initially given a booking for his challenge on Udogie but VAR advised referee Simon Hooper to look at it again on the monitor which resulted in Hooper upgrading the card to a red.

Jones will now miss Premier League games against Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

A club statement read: “Curtis Jones is set to serve a three-match Premier League suspension after an appeal to overturn the red card he received at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was unsuccessful”.

Many thought the red card decision was the wrong one including Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville:

“No, no, no. I know when you’re doing someone, I’ve done it myself, he wasn’t there to do someone. They’re showing the end motion which looks bad.

“But that’s not how it’s ended up there, his foot just slipped off the ball. It’s not a red card but he’s going to get one and it’s going to ruin the game probably.”

Liverpool also have Diogo Jota out for Sunday’s game against Brighton as he picked up two yellow cards in that Spurs defeat. Cody Gakpo will also not be involved after he picked up a heroic injury when scoring Liverpool’s equaliser last Saturday. Klopp confirmed he left in a leg brace:

“[It was] the biggest problem of the game, to be honest… before Cody Gakpo scored, we got a free-kick and he got injured and he is now with a brace limping down the corridor.

“That’s my biggest problem, to be honest, in this moment. We lost two [to red cards] and maybe a third player – really bad, really bad. So, yes, that’s something we have to deal with obviously.”
