Soumillon Sacked By Aga Khan After Saint-Cloud Elbowing
On Tuesday, The Aga Khan Stud issued a statement (see below) that has terminated the contract of Christophe Soumillon, which has come as a direct result of the Belgian jockey elbowing Rossa Ryan off his horse at Saint-Cloud last Friday (30th Sept) – you can see the incident again below.
Soumillon was seen at the weekend riding the Aga Khan’s Vadeni to a half-length second Sunday’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, but you feel even a win in Europe’s richest flat race wouldn’t have been good enough to save Soumillon his job.
He’d ridden as the retained rider in the famous green and red silks since 2014 after a previous spell between 2002 and 2009 – a period that saw the pair team up for Arc wins with Dalakhani (2003) and Zarkava (2008).
The racing world across the globe was shocked by last Friday’s incident and even though Soumillon was quick to come out after the race and apologise, it could have been so much worse had Rossa Ryan not walked away from the fall.
The France Galop were quick to react to give Soumillon a 60-day ban, but he was still able to ride on Saturday and Sunday of the lucrative Longchamp Arc meeting – with the ban not starting till 14th Oct.

France Galop has also pledged to look again at their rules so bans can be activated with immediate effect – mainly as Soumillon’s participation at Longchamp caused a lot of unrest, with the French governing body saying the ban should have been instant and they didn’t want him part of one of their biggest weekends.
Luckily, Rossa Ryan walked away from the incident and although thankfully no damage was done to the UK-based rider, there has certainly been a lot of damage to the career of Christophe Soumillon.
