China vs Tajikistan Preview and Prediction

Neither China nor Tajikistan are likely to go all the way and lift the Asian Cup come February, but both nations will be confident of progressing to the last 16 of the tournament from Group A.

For China and their head coach Aleksandar Jankovic, they will fancy themselves to perhaps even win Group A outright. However, they are in poor form, with just one win in their last five international matches.

Tajikistan on the other hand are the lower ranked nation, but are unbeaten in six which includes five wins and a draw. So despite being the big underdog to win this Group A game, they will firmly fancy their chances against China.

Tajikistan are somewhat riding the crest of a wave after winning one and drawing their other World Cup qualification matches so far. They could be on course to qualify for their first ever World Cup in 2026 if they have a strong Asian Cup this year too.

Despite being the more in-form side, the head-to-head record between China and Tajikistan certainly favours the Dragon’s Team. Tajikistan have never beaten China in their four previous h2h meetings (D 1, L 3). In fact, Tajikistan have never even scored a goal against China.

With this in mind, we expect this to be low scoring affair that is extremely tight. However, we can see Petar Šegrt’s Tajikistan getting one over on China and putting their first three points on the board at the 2023 Asian Cup.

Prediction: China 0-1 Tajikistan

China vs Tajikistan Tips

  • Tajikistan to Win @ 16/5
  • Under 2.5 Goals @ 1/2
  • Combined Odds @ 11/2

China vs Tajikistan Tip One: Tajikistan to Win @ 16/5

Despite being the underdogs in this one, Tajikistan are in far better form that China right now. China’s preparation was less than ideal for this tournament, losing four of their last five matches pre-tournament.

Tajikistan on the other hand have won five of their last six, and look to be playing their best football ever as a nation. History doesn’t favour them against their Chinese counterparts, but records are for DJs and are made to be broken.

With that in mind, we see 16/5 odds on a Tajikistan win as exceptional value. Yes they are the underdogs, but they are the form team of the two which tells us a lot about the confidence of both nations.

China vs Tajikistan Tip Two: Under 2.5 Goals @ 1/2

Three of Tajikistan’s last five matches have gone under 2.5 goals, with five of China’s last nine matches also producing just two goals or less.

The telling statistic here though is that in four previous meetings between the pair, three of them have produced one goal or less. Just China’s 4-0 win in 2010 produced over 2.5 goals, at a time where Tajikistan were nowhere near as as strong a team as they are now.

Taking this into consideration, SportsLens believe that this match is destined to be a low scoring affair.
