Horse racing returns to the home of National Hunt racing – Cheltenham – for the final time in 2023 with the two-day December Meeting this Friday and Saturday.

So, a lot to get the pulses ‘racing’ and the tapes go up on Friday with a seven-race card that include five LIVE races on ITV4.
You can see the full December Meeting schedule and race times here, and also use our key Cheltenham trends to put history on your side.
Five LIVE ITV4 Cheltenham Races On Friday – Starting at 1:15pm
Friday’s LIVE ITV4 action gets going at 1:15pm with the Catesby Estates Handicap Hurdle – a race that we could see the 2019 Triumph Hurdle winner Pentland Hills in action in for trainer Nicky Henderson.
If the stats are to be trusted we are looking for horses that recorded a ‘top 4’ finish last time and are aged 6 or younger.
Next up is a Mares’ Handicap Chase at 1:50pm and despite only seven past runnings there are already some nice Cheltenham trends building up. These include 86% of these winners aged between 6-8, while ALL of the seven winners raced within the last six weeks.
A Veterans’ Chase at 2:25pm – one that many would like to see slotted into the Cheltenham Festival. Just the one past runnings, but last year’s winner Magic Dancer could be back for more for the Kerry Lee yard that have a decent 27% strike-rate with their chasers at Prestbury Park. The Lee stable could also have course winner Storm Control.
It’s the ‘marmite’ Glenfarclas Cross Country Race (3:00pm) next that is expected to see the 2021 winner Diesel D’Allier returning to defend his crown. While the Festival’s X-Country runner-up Galvin could also be back over the unique Cheltenham fences. If so, he’s likely to be be popular with the best UK horse racing betting sites.
With 83% of the last 18 winners of this race having raced over the Cross Country course before – this is a good place to start.
We end the opening day of the Cheltenham December Meeting 2023 with the Citipost Handicap Hurdle at 3:35pm. We could have yet another past winner in Captain Morgs, who won the prize in 2022. While with a 75% return in the last 20 runnings, the Cheltenham trends here suggest homing in on horses aged 7 or younger.
