The bidding war in the early hours of this morning for Moises Caicedo ultimately swung in favour of Liverpool, leaving Chelsea without their chief transfer target after months of courting. It does however appear that the Blues have another name in the pipeline, with PSG’s Marco Verratti touted for a move to West London.

Liverpool have finally flexed their financial muscles, blowing any notions of their owners tightening the purse strings completely out the water.

The £110m fee agreed for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is a British transfer record, a figure that Chelsea were seemingly unprepared to match despite leading a one horse race for his signature for the vast majority of the summer.

It leaves the Blues pondering their next move. Yes, they have triggered the £20m release clause for USA captain Tyler Adams, but they were prepared to sanction moves for both him and Caicedo, until Liverpool annexed them at the final hour.

The hierarchy are now reportedly scrambling to identify alternative targets before September 1st’s deadline. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, PSG midfielder Marco Verratti could well be the man to fit the bill.

The Italian is readily available after being deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Luis Enrique, and at 30-years-old has plenty left in the tank.

PSG’s squad overhaul reportedly includes letting Verratti go, with the club eager to add fresh midfield talent with the fee he commands. Although he is rated at £70m by the Parisians, it is likely they would accept a bid significantly lower than that figure.

Having long been linked with a move away throughout his 11-year career in the French capital, it now appears it may finally come to fruition given Chelsea’s desperation for further options in midfield.
