Chelsea have been hit with a huge blow to their 2023-24 campaign as French defender, Wesley Fofana, has undergone surgery on a horror ACL injury.

Supporters were concerned after the France international was excluded from Mauricio Pochettino’s 29-man squad which travelled to the United States for their pre-season due to a ‘knee-injury.’

Chelsea confirmed on Monday that Fofana would remain at Cobham and his problem was being assessed by the club’s medical department.

However, the Blues have now confirmed the severity of the injury, as the former Leicester player has undergone surgery after rupturing his ACL.

This is not the first major injury of the 22-year-old’s career, as back in 2021, he sustained a broken leg while playing for Leicester against Villarreal in a pre-season friendly.

The 2023-24 campaign was set to be a huge year for both Chelsea, and the defender, after a disappointing campaign at Stamford Bridge last year.

The Blues had a catastrophic campaign, as they finished 12th in the Premier League and recorded the lowest points tally in the club’s history.

Former Brighton manager, Graham Potter, was hired in September and was sacked after just six-months following a poor run of results.

His replacement, Frank Lampard, was unable to improve life at Stamford Bridge and the Blues ended the season without a single victory over any side in the top six.

Fofana was tipped to be a huge part of their season, however, the Frenchman only appeared 25 times in all competitions last season, with two of his performances coming in Leicester City’s opening fixtures in the 2022-23 campaign.

The young defender is reportedly set to return after the Christmas break, however, a specific date is yet to be confirmed – meaning we could see him sooner or later than expected.
