Carney Chukwuemeka has looked like one of Chelsea’s brightest players at the start of this season, but the youngster is set to miss up to six weeks of action after undergoing knee surgery.

Chukwuemeka opened the scoring for Chelsea at the weekend, before the Blues went on to lose 2-1 to 10-man West Ham in a disappointing performance.

There was positives to take out of the game for Chukwuemeka, who scored his first Premier League goal for Chelsea to level the score with the Hammers after half an hour played.

Unfortunately for Chelsea the 19-year-old picked up a serious injury just after hitting the back of the net on Sunday, with Mauricio Pochettino confirming the bad news after the loss.

“With Carney, we need to assess him and we will see tomorrow and hope he will be alright, he will see the doctor and I hope it will not be a big issue.”

Chukwuemeka has since been assessed by Chelsea’s doctors, who decided that the midfielder would need to have surgery on his injured knee which could keep him out for up to six weeks.

Having just signed Moises Caicedo for a new world record fee, Chelsea should have no problems replacing Chukwuemeka who has looked on top form in his opening two games of the season.

Speaking after the West Ham loss, Chukwuemeka described the bitter sweet feeling he had taken from Chelsea’s first loss of the season: “Bitter sweet feeling scoring my first goal for Chelsea but picking up an injury and not coming home with three points,”

“Minor setback but I’ll be back very soon. Thank you Chelsea fans for your love and support.”
