Brighton vs Marseille (1-0) Report: Joao Pedro Wins It Late

Brighton were very much on top of things throughout the first half, with the Seagulls dominating possession while keeping their Ligue 1 opponents to just one shot on target.

Although they had four efforts on goal and looked on top throughout the half, Brighton weren’t able to break the deadlock during the first period and the sides entered the tunnel with no goals scored after 45 minutes.

Despite having most of the chances in the first half, it was Marseille who went closest to scoring the first goal, as Jonathan Clauss’ deflected effort bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Former Sheffield United star Iliman Ndiayen replaced Vitinha after an hour, with the visitors looking for a goal that would confirm top spot in the group.

It was Brighton who would take the lead late in the game though, with Roberto de Zerbi’s side pushing for the goal that would secure top spot in the group heading to the knockout stages.

Sure enough the hosts were able to find a winner late on, with Joao Pedro netting a winner with just two minutes to spare that sent the Amex into delirium.

Pedro was able to control the ball in a tight area inside the box, before smashing a deserved winner home to give his side what was an extremely hard fought win at home.

The goal from Brighton’s reliable new talisman was enough for the Seagulls to leapfrog Marseille in the standings, with de Zerbi’s side advancing to the knockouts as a top seed.

What Next For Brighton & Marseille?
