Brighton vs AEK Athens Preview
Roberto De Zerbi leads Brighton into their first ever European campaign on Thursday when they welcome Greek outfit AEK Athens to the Amex.
The Seagulls have a tough group that also includes Ajax and Marseille, with their gameweek one clash against AEK likely being their easiest on paper, therefore it’s vital that they secure three points if they want to advance to the knockout stages.
They come into the clash boasting a good record in the Premier League thus far, having won four of their five matches in 2023/24, with their latest victory coming over Manchester United in a 3-1 drubbing at Old Trafford.
Prior to that they recorded another impressive triumph over another one of England’s Champions League representatives in Newcastle, beating the Magpies by the same 3-1 scoreline.
As for AEK, they were eliminated from the Champions League in the play-off round at the hands of Belgian champions Royal Antwerp, and have played just three matches in the Greek Super League so far this term.
Matias Almeyda’s side have won just one of those three matches, with the other two finishing in 1-1 stalemates, with the latest coming against Olympiacos at the weekend.
