Bournemouth’s relegation odds have been slashed to 4/6, as they beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side 1-0 in an impressive display earlier this afternoon.
Gary O’Neil’s side came into this fixture deflated after a last-minute defeat to Arsenal in their latest Premier League match. However, they started the match against Liverpool superbly and could have opened the scoring five minutes in but Anthony failed to find the back of the net.
The Cherries did find a way to take the lead as Philip Billing scored his sixth goal of the campaign. Dango Ouatarra jinked his way into the Liverpool box and found the Dane, who hammered the ball home.
It was not plain sailing for the home side, as the Reds came close to levelling things through Virgil Van Dijk. His first header was cleared off the line by a retreating Adam Smith and his second header forced a superb save from Neto.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had the perfect opportunity to equalise, as Diogo Jota came off the becn to win his side a penalty. But leading goalscorer Mohamed Salah smashed his penalty wide of the goal and Bournemouth stayed ahead.
The home side were resolute in their defending and kept Liverpool at bay for the remainder of the half, despite the Reds onslaught of attacks. However, it was to no avail as Bournemouth held on to grab all three points and leave Klopp’s side extremest disappointed.
Can Bournemouth avoid the drop?
It has been a tough few weeks for the Cherries, as they have faced Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool in their last three fixtures. However, the victory today makes it three from a possible nine points and boosts their chances of avoiding relegation.
The relegation contenders travel to Aston Villa for their next league fixture and will be hoping to take the confidence from today’s result. They remain in the bottom three places, but a win next week could see them move out the relegation zone.
