Borussia Dortmund pulled off a huge upset as Newcastle United were beaten at home in the Champions League with the only goal of the game coming from Felix Nmecha.

Nmecha put the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time with a fabulous first-time finish from Nico Schlotterbeck’s delivery, which proved to be the winner on a disappointing night for the Magpies.

Newcastle entered as heavy favourites following an impressive start to their Champions League campaign, sharing the points with AC Milan on the road and smashing PSG 4-1 at St. James’ Park.

Dortmund lost 2-0 to PSG and picked up a point against Milan, but they have well and truly got into gear with an important victory on Tyneside which sees the German outfit level on points with Eddie Howe’s side after three games.

According to Opta, after losing in each of their last six away games in England in European competitions, Dortmund have won their first on the road since beating Spurs 2-1 in March 2016.

Group F, touted as the group of death, continues in two weeks’ time which sees Newcastle travel to Germany for the reverse fixture whilst PSG head to the San Siro.

A fresh injury blow was the last thing Howe wanted to hear ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Wolves on Saturday, as Alexander Isak re-aggravated a groin problem and Jacob Murphy dislocated his shoulder.

According to the latest odds, the Magpies have seen their price drift as high as 28/1 to win the competition whilst Dortmund are even bigger – available at 100/1 with some firms.

Tonight, Newcastle suffered a home defeat in a major European outing for the first time since March 2003 against Barcelona. In that period, they had gone 24 games unbeaten with 19 wins and five draws.
