Championship side Blackburn welcome Premier League big-spenders Newcastle to Ewood Park in the FA Cup fifth round on Tuesday, with the squad values of both sides separated by almost £500million.

Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side head down to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round on Tuesday night, as the Riversiders aim to reach the last eight of the competition for a second successive season. If the Magpies are victorious, they will reach the quarter finals for the first time since 2020.

With the gap in finances between the Championship and the Premier League as prominent as ever, we at SportsLens are taking a look at the squad values of both sides ahead of the midweek action.

Blackburn vs Newcastle Squad Values Compared: Positional Breakdown

Goalkeepers

John Eustace has two goalkeepers to choose from within his squad, with Leopold Wahlstedt (£1.9m) and Aynsley Pears (£770k) worth a combined £2.67m. Wahlstedt was the preferred number one to kickstart the campaign, however Pears has claimed the number one jersey in recent weeks and is expected to start against Newcastle.

As for the Magpies, first and second choice goalkeepers Nick Pope (£17.1m) and Martin Dubravka (£850k) are out injured, therefore ex-Liverpool stopper Loris Karius (£850k) should line-up in between the sticks. Mark Gillespie (£250k) is another option, with Newcastle’s four goalkeepers worth a combined £19.1m.

Defenders

25-year-old left-back Harry Pickering is Blackburn’s most valuable defender at £3.85m, followed by Dominic Hyam (£3.4m), Hayden Carter (£2.1m) and Callum Brittain (£2.1m). All 11 of their registered defenders combine to a value £15.75m, while Newcastle’s Sven Botman (£38.5m) is worth more than that on his own.

The Magpies’ second most valuable defender behind Botman is young Tino Livramento, priced just shy of £30m, with Lewis Hall also surpassing the £10m mark at £15.4m. Kieran Trippier comes in as the fourth highest valued defender within their squad despite being 33-years-old, with a price of £9.4m attached to his name.

Midfielders

The gap in value between the sides is most evident when comparing both sets of midfielders, with Blackburn’s most valuable player in the middle of the park, Yasin Ayari, being valued at £4.275m, while Newcastle’s highest valued is Bruno Guimaraes at £72.7m.

Blackburn’s nine midfielders come out to a value of around £18.65m when combined. Sammie Szmodics (£3.85m), Arnor Sigurdsson (£3m) and Andy Moran (£2.56m) make up the bulk of the total alongside Ayari.

As for the Magpies’ midfield total, it comes out to a whopping value of just under £220m. Joelinton (£38.5m) and the suspended Sandro Tonali (£34.2m) are the second and third highest valued midfielders after Guimaraes.

Forwards

It’ll come as little surprise to hear that the gap in valuation between both sets of forwards is at more than £170m.

The likes of Alexander Isak (£60m), Anthony Gordon (£42.75m) and Harvey Barnes (£30m) all combine, along with Miguel Almiron (£25.65m), Jacob Murphy (£12.8m) and Callum Wilson (£11.1m), to a total of around £182.1m.

The Riversiders’ most expensive player within their entire squad, Tyrhys Dolan (£5.1m), doesn’t even scratch the surface of Newcastle’s lowest valued attacker. Their total value when combining their six attacking players equates to just over £9.4m.
