Kitty’s Light Bids for Scottish National and bet365 Gold Cup Double

The Christian Williams camp won their second Scottish Grand National in as many years last Saturday when Kitty’s Light backed up her place at the head of the market to win the Ayr race by 3 lengths (watch below).

And he’s back in action again today!

Yes, racing fans will get the chance to see him back on the track as soon as this Saturday at Sandown Park as his connections are plotting a famous staying chase double inside a week.

It’s hard to believe he’s still only a 7 year-old but has already had 29 career runs, so is certainly well experienced for his age – winning 6 times – and will now be having his third run in the bet365 Gold Cup this Saturday.

He’s been put in as the 4/1 favourite for the race by sponsors bet365, in what will be his 30th career outing. You can also see the leading bet365 Gold Cup odds with the best UK horse racing betting sites and get some nice free bets along the way.

The horse is also no stranger to the bet365 Gold Cup – having run third in it last year and also took a silver medal back in 2021 as a sprightly 5 year-old!

This Saturday’s Sandown fixture is also the final meeting of the 2022/23 National Hunt season.

Kitty’s Light Took In Both Races Last Year Too

Running in both the Scottish National and the bet365 Gold Cup isn’t uncommon for Kitty’s Light either. The 7 year-old ran in both races 12 months ago too – running second in the National and third in the Gold Cup.

However, it’s worth noting there was a three-week gap between the two races in 2022, whereas this year it’s just a week.

Hot Weld Was the Last Horse To Win Both Races In The Same Season

Winning both the Scottish Grand National and Saturday’s bet365 Gold Cup in the same season has also been done fairly recently.

It was only in 2007 that the Ferdy Murphy-trained Hot Weld managed the big-race double – and guess what? The races that year were also only a week apart!

Jockey PJ McDonald, who is now a flat rider, rode Hot Weld to win the Scottish National and it was another pilot, that has now also switched to the flat, that steered him home in the bet365 Gold Cup 7 days later – Graham Lee.

Last Year’s bet365 Winner Hewick Won’t Run

Hewick, who took the race 12 months ago, did have an entry up until Thursday, but the Irish raider, who we last saw falling when running well in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, won’t run to defend his crown. However, Sandown racegoers will still get a chance to see him as he’s been rerouted to the Oaksey Chase at 2.50.

Frodon To Carry The bet365 Gold Cup Top Weight

With no Hewick, then the top weight slot has now been handed to the former Ryanair Chase and King George winner Frodon. The 11 year-old landed the Oaksey Chase at this meeting in 2021 and will have regular rider Bryony Frost getting the leg-up.
