Best FPL Newcomers 2023/24

Dominik Szoboszlai – Liverpool (£7m)

Liverpool have made significant inroads to bolster perhaps their weakest position on the pitch last season.

A slew of outgoings in midfield have been backed up by two notable additions in midfield – the first being Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, while Dominik Szoboszlai joined soon after last month.

The Hungarian may be unfamiliar to some, but those who have cast a keen eye over German football, and the Champions League in recent seasons, will be familiar with his wildly unique skillset.

Perhaps best known for his ability to strike the ball with real venom, he is also an effective all-rounder in midfield – you’d be hard pushed to find a player kinder on the eyes when he is in full flow.

It is unclear how quickly he will adapt to life in a superior league, but the 22-year-old appears ready for the step up after chipping in with 10 goals and 13 assists for Leipzig last season.

At £7m, he comes in an intriguing mid-rang price for FPL managers.

Joao Pedro – Brighton (£5.5m)

Brighton sought to complete their business early, making Joao Pedro one of the first signings of the window in top-flight.

Although the Brazilian isn’t technically a newcomer to the Premier League having featured for Watford two years ago, the 21-year-old was one of their standout players in the Championship last year.

Capable of playing anywhere across the front line, he ranked in the top 10% for dribbles, long passes and successful attacking actions per 90 last term, while he also added an impressive return of 11 goals and four assists.

In a Brighton team that will suit his abilities far better than a stuttering Watford side, his full-throttle style of play should see him thrive.

Roberto De Zerbi’s vision for the future is clear and FPL managers should trust his judgment, particularly given he is valued at an eye-catching price of just £5.5m.

Pau Torres – Aston Villa (£4.5m)

Unai Emery’s influence at Aston Villa can not be underestimated as he dragged a side in threat of relegation, all the way up to European qualification.

One of the notable changes that became apparent when arrived mid-way through last season was the switch in focus from the defence, who would go on to finish with 12 clean sheets (sixth-most in the league).

Add to that Pau Torres, who is one of Emery’s former players during his time at Villarreal. The Spaniard has been a long-time target of some of Europe’s elite clubs including Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Barcelona. His arrival is a real coup for Villa.

He will help to shore up the Villa defence even more while adding a decent goal threat as a six-foot-two centre-back – he scored 10 goals across 136 appearances in La Liga.

Backed up by an increasingly confident Emi Martinez in goal, Torres could turn out to be one of the best FPL newcomers at just £4.5m if Villa continue to defend with confidence.
