Fantasy Premier League managers tend to focus a large chunk of their budget on players who regularly score and assist, but the value of those between the sticks can not be underestimated. Join us as we run through the best FPL goalkeepers to select for your teams this campaign.

Budget FPL Goalkeepers

Sam Johnstone – Crystal Palace (£4.5m)

Although Crystal Palace narrowly missed out on a top-half finish last season, they were one of the more defensively sound sides in the division.

49 conceded is less than three of the teams who finished above them, and they looked to be in much better shape when Roy Hodgson took over the reins once again. The period between his return to the club and the end of the season saw them concede just 11 times – the third-best record of any team within that time frame.

Sam Johnstone, Palace’s shot-stopper, was reinstated as number one and he more than repaid Hodgson’s faith.

He could well be a shrewd budget selection given Palace’s favourable run in their opening fixtures; they face Sheffield United, Brentford, Wolves, Fulham and Nottingham Forest in their first eight games, which are all winnable.

Jason Steele – Brighton (£4.5m)

Although the £16m signing of fellow goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has left fans pondering who Roberto De Zerbi will deploy as number one, we expect Jason Steele to keep his spot.

Steele’s ability to pick a pass while under pressure saw him replace Robert Sanchez as the starting keeper back in March, and it now looks as if the latter may be on his way out of the club.

In 16 appearances last year, Steele kept six clean sheets and clocked in with eight bonus points. The Seagulls face Luton (H), Wolves (A) and West Ham (H) in their first three fixtures, while five of their first eight are at home.

Mid-Range FPL Goalkeepers

Andre Onana – Manchester United (£5m)

This section will be short and sweet given we are going to actively avoid picking Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya – who are both excellent picks for FPL teams – but it is unclear who would be number one should the latter move to Arsenal.

Therefore, Manchester United’s goalkeeping upgrade in the shape of Andre Onana looks to be an intriguing pick at just £5m.

The Cameroonian has been a household name for a number of years, but his daring style of play certainly caught the eye last season as he helped Inter Milan reach the Champions League final – a competition he led in terms of clean sheets.

Wolves and Nottingham Forest in their opening three games, coupled with the fact goalkeepers get bonus points for pass completions and saves, could lead to Onana being a popular pick.

Premium FPL Goalkeepers

Nick Pope – Newcastle (£5.5m)

Certainly an FPL pick that more than paid dividends last season, Nick Pope is worth the high price point.

He was second only to David De Gea (17) in terms of clean sheets with 14 last season, and played a starring role in Newcastle conceding the joint-least goals in the league, alongside champions Manchester City.

It might be preferable, however, to select another player between the ticks for the opening few months – the Magpies face Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool, Brighton and Brentford in their first five games.

Ederson – Manchester City (£5.5m)

If purely basing your selection off last season, Liverpool’s Allison is the obvious pick having picked up 162 FPL points in total – only David Raya managed more.

However, if you are eager to race out the blocks and establish an early points haul, Manchester City have a favourable run that includes newly-promoted Burnley on matchday one and Sheffield United on matchday three.

Ederson also kept 11 clean sheets last season which is not to be sniffed at.
