Our Becher Chase tips 2023 give you a quickfire 1-2-3 selection from SportsLens’ Andy Newton as horse racing fans lock themselves in for another ‘must-see’ renewal over the famous Grand National fences. Ashtown Lad, who is popular in the betting, won the race 12 months ago and is back for more. Can he defend his Aintree crown?

Becher Chase Tips 2023: Percussion To Make The Right Noises

Saturday’s Becher Chase was first run back in 1992 and despite often being linked with the Grand National – as it’s also run over the same fences – we are yet to see a horse win both contests in the same season.

Yes, Earth Summit won the Becher Chase the season after he landed his 1998 National, while Amberleigh House and Silver Birch won both races – but many seasons apart.

Despite this poor record, after Saturday’s race the talk with the best UK horse racing betting sites will still revolve around what price the winner will be for the Grand National.

And that winner can be the Laura Morgan-trained PERCUSSION (E/W), who can make sweet music at Aintree and is the first of our Becher Chase tips.

This 8 year-old was last seen running second in the Grand Sefton Chase on 11th November (watch below) and having stayed on well that day over 2m5f in heavy ground is well worth another crack at this longer trip (3m2f).

His overall Aintree record over these fences is solid too – running 3-3-2 – having also been third in this race 12 months ago and gets in off the same mark. With all this in mind Percussion is the main of the Becher Chase tips at a track we know he loves.

The slight negative is that with the 162-raced Coko Beach in the race Percussion is racing from 6lbs out of the handicap, but this also means he’s only got 10-2 in weight to carry. Last year he had 10-11, so is running with 9lbs less on his back.

Becher Chase Tips: 1-2-3 Best Bets For Aintree

The horses to follow Percussion home can be last year’s winner Ashtown Lad and the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Undersupervision,

Ashtown Lad hasn’t won a race since taking the Becher Chase 12 months ago when Harry Skelton guided him home. However, the good news is that this means he gets in here off only a 2lb higher rating.

A recent run at Wincanton (pulled up) would have blown the cobwebs away with the Skelton camp having this race as his firm target.

Undersupervision is a tad young based on the Becher Chase trends – as 19 of the last 21 winners have been aged 8 or older. Only Vieux Lion Rouge and Silver Birch have won as 7 year-olds since 1994.

However, the Twiston-Davies teams did win the Becher Chase back in 1993 with a 7 year-old and this was the first of six wins in the race for the yard.  No stable has had more Becher Chase winners than NTD.

This 134-rated chaser was a fine third in his return run at Cheltenham in November, which was his second outing this season. He should, therefore, be spot-on for this now and even though this will also be his first try over these fences, is sure to have been well schooled.

He should also get in with a light weight and there is every chance Sam Twiston-Davies, who has won this race twice in the past, will ride.

  • 1st: PERCUSSION (E/W)
  • 2nd: Ashtown Lad
  • 3rd: Undersupervision
