Despite having the lion’s share of chances and possession, Chelsea were dealt yet another defeat at the hands of Real Madrid on Tuesday. In doing so, it handed Frank Lampard the unfortunate record of four consecutive defeats in his first four games since returning to West London – the only manager to achieve this feat in the club’s 118-year history.

With any remote hopes of Champions League glory well and truly wiped from the season, they also find themselves some way off qualifying for next year’s edition, or any of the three European competitions for that matter.

Without the cash injection from competing around the continent, coupled with a reported operating loss of £235 million for the financial year, Todd Boehly and the Blues may be forced into trimming down their bloated squad in the summer.

Perhaps Barcelona are aware of their predicament, after Director of Football Mateu Alemany and Sports Director Jordi Cruyff were both present at Stamford Bridge.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the pair had flown into the capital in order to cast a keen eye over midfield target N’Golo Kante, who impressed in a more advanced role.

The two-time Premier League and World Cup winner recently returned to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The club are eager to extend his current contract, with a two-year proposal thought to have been tabled for some time, but the possibility of the Frenchman leaving looks just as likely as his deal winds down.

The Blaugrana will, of course, have to prove to La Liga they can afford to pay his wages amid an ongoing tussle over Financial Fair Play, but the viable prospect of a free transfer excites the Spanish league leaders.

Both Cesar Azpilicueta, who was a main target for them last summer, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who featured at the Nou Camp on loan before making the switch to Chelsea, are also thought to be on their radar ahead of the transfer window opening.

The former was ruled out through injury last night, while the latter has fallen completely out of favour with the club who opted not to register him in their Champions League squad.
