Australia 2023 Asian Cup Preview
The Australian national team head to Qatar for their fifth appearance at an Asian Cup finals this month, as Graham Arnold’s side attempts to replicate the heroics of the Aussies’ 2015 title winning side.
Australia confirmed their qualification to the tournament by finishing with a 100% record at the top of Group B in the second round of 2022 World Cup qualifying – 12 points clear of second and third place Kuwait and Jordan. Thanks to their position in the FIFA World Rankings in April 2023, they were placed in ‘Pot 1’ for the group draw and were subsequently drawn into Group B.
They get their campaign underway in the tournament’s second fixture on 13 January against India in Al Rayyan, before they take on Syria five days later at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, followed by their final group stage match against Uzbekistan in Al Wakrah on 23 January.
Australia Player To Watch
Garang Kuol of Newcastle United (on loan at Volendam), Nestory Irankunda soon-to-be of Bayern Munich, Alex Robertson of Manchester City (on loan at Portsmouth) and Alessandro Circati of Parma have all missed out on a place in Arnold’s squad for the Asian Cup in Qatar despite being some of the nation’s most exciting young talents.
In fact, Arnold has failed to name a single player younger than 21-years-old in his squad, and our pick for the Aussie player to watch for the tournament is one of the youngest faces in the squad – Samuel Silvera.
Silvera will be a recognisable name to those who follow the Championship, and Middlesbrough in particular, as the winger has been an ever-present figure in Michael Carrick’s front line since joining from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in the summer.
The 23-year-old has had a strong start to life in England, registering four goals and three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions for the Riversiders this term. Silvera also made his first start for the Socceroos in their final Asian Cup preparation match against Bahrain at the beginning of January, putting in an excellent attacking display alongside Mitchell Duke in a comfortable 2-0 win.
