This summer’s Ashes is shaping up to be one of the closest in recent memory, with both Australia and England boasting evenly matched teams, but a Glenn McGrath Ashes prediction points towards a 5-0 whitewash for the Baggy Greens.

McGrath’s comments must be taken with a pinch of salt however, having predicted a 5-0 whitewash for Australia in every test since his retirement in 2007 – incidentally, he was part of the Aussie side that registered a series clean sweep that year against England.

The Ashes returns to English soil this summer, and the hosts will be aiming to regain the trophy for the first time in eight years, having failed to build on their 3-2 series win back in 2015. Despite this, Australia also hold a fairly ugly record in England in recent editions, having failed to win away from home since 2001.

Under the guidance of talismanic Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, who was appointed in May of last year, England have won 10 out of 12 tests since the start of last summer, and former Ashes winner Glenn McGrath admitted his usual 5-0 whitewash comments may carry less substance in 2023.

Labelling the fearless, full-blooded cricket we have seen as of late from England as ‘Bazball,’ he said his compatriots must race into an early lead to prevent England from building momentum.

When asked for his predictions, he replied: “‘5-0. But I’m not going to ever say anything else, am I? I might be being a bit tongue-in-cheek.

“Australia have not won a series in England since 2001. They will need to start well. They can’t let England go 1-0 up with the way England are playing at the moment.”

McGrath, who became test cricket’s third-most successful fast-bowler in the world-beating Aussie side of the late 90’s/early 2000’s, even drew comparisons between this current England side, and the era-defining 2005 winning side that ended a chokehold of eight successive Australian Ashes wins.

‘I think of that team in 2005 that beat my Australia team for the first time in a long time.

“If you play without fear, it’s amazing what you can achieve.”
