Aston Villa vs Manchester City Report: Bailey Shines In Villa Win

Many questioned whether Villa could maintain their perfect home record heading into gameweek 15, but Leon Bailey silenced those doubters by netting a second half winner against Manchester City to overtake them in the league table.

It was clear from the off that Unai Emery‘s Aston Villa were out for blood in Birmingham on Wednesday with Bailey forcing Ederson into a strong stop just six minutes into the clash.

Pau Torres went close from the resulting corner, curling an effort towards the top left corner but for the Brazilian goalkeeper to make another crucial stop to keep the scores level.

City got in on the act just four minutes later in a hectic opening 10, as Erling Haaland’s strike inside the area was denied superbly by Emiliano Martinez before Bernardo Silva found the Norwegian at the far post from the rebound, but his point-blank header was saved by Martinez once again.

Ex-Manchester City midfielder Douglas Luiz put the ball in the back of the net just before the half time whistle, however his effort was disallowed after Lucas Digne took the ball out of play before crossing.

Villa came out in the second period on the hunt for that elusive goal, and after City were on the ropes for what felt like an age – Bailey put the hosts in front through a deflected effort from the edge of the area after 74 minutes.

Luiz went close once again on the 85 minute mark by rattling the woodwork with a curled effort, but it would make no difference in the end as Villa secured a mighty 1-0 win over the reigning champions.

That victory makes it seven wins from seven at Villa Park for Emery’s side this term, as well as 14 straight victories at home in the Premier League – a feat last achieved 92 years ago.
