Despite being held to a rather disappointing stalemate by Wolves, Aston Villa have maintained their position in the top five of the Premier League table.

There were few chances for either side to take the lead in the first half at the Molineux on Sunday, with Wolves’ best effort coming from Rayan Ait-Nouri who sent a first time effort narrowly wide of the post after connecting to Hwang Hee-chan’s low driven cross.

Matty Cash had a similar chance to Ait-Nouri’s down the other end, but his first time effort at the far post was saved brilliantly by Jose Sa in front of a passionate home support.

With honours even at the break – it was all to play for in the second period, and it delivered plenty of action for both sides as the hosts took the lead just eight minutes into the half.

In-form Pedro Neto broke down the right flank with pace and served a fantastic cross to Hwang in the Villa box, and the South Korea international made no mistake in slotting past Emiliano Martinez.

The lead was short lived though, as Pau Torres turned home his first goal in Villa colours after connecting to an inch-perfect Ollie Watkins cross to level the score with just over half an hour to play.

Chances were few and far between up until added time, as Mario Lemina was shown a second yellow card – reducing the hosts to 10-men, which inspired a late Villa surge with Nicolo Zaniolo, Ezri Konsa and Watkins going close, but Wolves managed to hold on to secure a point.

Despite the disappointment of dropping two points, Villa maintain their fifth place position in the Premier League table, whilst Wolves move ahead of Everton and Brentford into 14th place.

Villa now face a tough period with fixtures against West Ham and AZ Alkmaar upon returning from the international break, meanwhile Gary O’Neil’s Wolves face a crunch bottom half clash against Bournemouth, followed by a visit from Newcastle to the Midlands.
