Aston Villa are reportedly advancing in negotiations with Villarreal over the transfer of Spanish defender Pau Torres after Bayern Munich have decided to prioritise a move for Kim-min Jae.

Midlands-based club Aston Villa are reportedly advancing in negotiations to sign Pau Torres from Villarreal as they prepare for their return to European football.

Villa last played in Europe during the 2010/11 season, but after finishing seventh in the Premier League last term, they will compete in the Conference League this season.

This has left a need for the club to invest in their playing squad in order to be fully equipped for the demands of playing in Europe alongside domestic competitions.

And this certainly looks to be happening, with Youri Tielemans already through the door, and Torres edging ever closer to joining, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The football transfer specialist confirmed that a deal between Villa and Villarreal has not yet been struck, however talks are progressing at a key stage in negotiations.

Romano revealed the latest on Torres’ links to Villa on his social platforms on Thursday morning.

“Aston Villa are advancing in talks to sign Pau Torres. Deal not completed yet but progressing to key stages between the two clubs.” he tweeted.

“Bayern decided to go for Kim as priority and Villa now pushing to sign Pau — as Unai Emery wants him.”

As confirmed by Romano, Bayern were interested in the Spaniard, but have since put all of their focus on completing the signing of Kim-min Jae from Napoli.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been reported as potential suitors for Torres, but the Spaniard’s link to Emery looks to be paying dividends for Villa.

Emery previously managed Torres at Villarreal between 2020 and 2022, prior to his Premier League return, and it is said that he is the one pushing to get the deal done for his former centre-back.
